James Harvey Spire Post 787
Cicero, New York
The American Legion was chartered by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization. Focusing on service to veterans, service members and communities, the Legion evolved from a group of war-weary veterans of World War I into one of the most influential nonprofit groups in the United States. Membership swiftly grew to over 1 million, and local posts sprang up across the country. Today, membership stands at nearly 2 million in more than 13,000 posts worldwide.
Over the years, the Legion has influenced considerable social change in America, won hundreds of benefits for veterans, was instrumental in getting the GI Bill passed and produced many important programs for children and youth. The Legion's premise is based on four pillars: Veterans Affairs and Rehabilitation, National Security, Americanism and Children and Youth.

James Harvey Spire Post 787 The Cicero American Legion was charted on January 5th, 1920 and was the first organized American Legion Post in Onondaga County. The Post is named after James Harvey Spire who lived on Mud Mill Road in Cicero, NY. James enlisted in the Army in August 1917 and was a member of C Company, 107th Infantry. He was killed September 29th, 1918 in the Battle of Duck Valley, France and is buried in Lampire Aisne, France. Initial Post meetings were held at the Kings Hotel on Route 11 in Cicero and later at the Cicero Grange Hall on Route 31. In 1948, the former Cicero Union School building on the corner of Routes 11 and 31 was acquired from The Odd Fellows (I. O. O. F) and Rebekans who used it for their lodge room. They donated the building to the Post with the provision that they would have use of the building for their regular meetings as long as the organization existed. The post received its liquor license in 1962 and began a $5000 remodeling program. Post membership continued to grow and in 1995 with a membership exceeding 400 the Post acquired their present property at 5575 Legionnaire Drive and built the current post home in 1996. In 2019 the Post became the largest membership post of any American Legion Post in New York…and it continues to be to this day with 880 Legion members. We are a very vibrant Post with an extremely active Auxiliary Unit, Sons Squadron and Legion Riders Chapter. Order Today
